How It Works....
Right about now your probably wondering WHY this works..
let me explain how the above goal settings interact.
I'll just walk through one capture event and one drop
even since both red and blue caps are handled in the same way.
So lets say we have several players on our CTF
map they have joined the map like so...
| RED TEAM | BLUE TEAM |
| BigJoe (scout on offense) | HeavyD (demoman on defense) |
| Franky (sniper on defense) | Plague (medic on offense) |
| Mecho (engineer on defense) |
follow the story and watch how the entities work as the
game progresses.
| Events | Goal States/explanations |
| All of our players(listed above) spawn into a fresh map. On the red side
Franky or sniper moves to the sniper balcony and takes up a covering position
while Mecho starts setting up his Sentry Gun. BigJoe, our scout, grabs his
concs and heads off to the blue base.
Meanwhile across the map HeavyD has layed his pipe trap at the front door and Plague (medic) has already made it to the water tunnel for a long swim to the red base. |
Red Team Flag: Inactive at start point Cap: Inactive Vox: Inactive Blue Team |
| BigJoe, being an adept capper, conc jumps to the sniper deck of the blue
base and heads down to the flag via the "back way".
Over at the Red base, Mecho has just finished upgrading his SG and has taken up patrolling the base about the time Plague, the blue medic pops out of the water and heads to the flag via the main route. Mecho sees Plague heading for the Red flag an runs after him. Right then BigJoe snatches the flag from deep within the blue base and everyone hears the VOX announcements and sees the messages from the blue flag (item_tfgoal #1). |
Red Team Flag: Inactive at start point Cap: Inactive Vox: Inactive Blue Team |
| Shortly after the Blue flag was taken Plague reaches the Red flag with Mecho hot on his heels. As Plague picks up the flag everyone gets a new set of messages generated by the red flag (item_tfgoal#2) | Red Team Flag: Active, Carried by Plague Cap: Inactive Vox: Inactive Blue Team |
| BigJoe has reached the blue base sniper balcony w/o even seeing a blue
defender. He's halfway back with the blue flag and full on grenades, ammo,
and health.
Plague on the other hand isn't doing so hot. Though he managed to infect Mecho shortly after picking up the flag our intrepid engineer turned around, primed an EMP, and blew them both to bits. Both Plague and Mecho have free tickets to the respawn room and the red flag now sits halfway up the ramps. Everyone hears via the VOX from the red flag that the flag has been dropped |
Red Team Flag: Active, waiting for return Cap: Inactive Vox: Inactive Blue Team |
| Because BigJoe wants to cap as fast as possible he does another conc jump, this time from balcony to balcony.. a perfect landing.. seconds later the inevitable sound of a cap is heard, and a quick check of the scoreboard indicates that BigJoe, who now has 10 frags, has put the red team up by 10 points. | Red Team Flag: Active, waiting for return Cap: Inactive Vox: Inactive Blue Team |
| BigJoe, disappointed with the lack of defense on the blue side leaves
the game. Plague attempts to make a run across the bridge to get to the
red base but is dropped by Franky, who turns out to be an excellent marksman.
Between Franky and Mecho they manage to keep the blue players out of the red base until notified by vox and console messages that their flag returned. |
Red Team Flag: Inactive, at start piont Cap: Inactive Vox: Active Blue Team |
| the "Your flag has returned" vox finishes and now Mecho goes on the offensive .... | Red Team Flag: Inactive, at start point Cap: Inactive Vox: Inactive Blue Team |
You should have a fairly good idea how this goal system works now. Good luck with your maps!
Remember, the Department of Engineering forums are only a couple clicks away and full of knowledgeable people should you run into mapping problems or need info you don't find in the tutorials. Clan[WTF?] , the premiere HL mapping clan, also calls the DoE home.. so no matter what kind of problem you run into help isn't very far away.
